So semester Spring 2008 has started. It sort of started last night with two meetings. There was a joint meeting between KKY and TBS about honor band coming up and other various things. This is a busy semester since we have districts in March, but as soon as those pass it should greatly quiet down! Which is good because I'm sure I will be busy class wise. Then we had a regular TBS meeting. Where some random girl came in and asked us if we were a sorority. We say, yes. She says, oh okay...and babbles on about something and another and how Steph and Alex are Beta Gamma's. I don't know, but eventually we convinced her that we were not who she thought we were. Although we do have a Stephanie and an Alex, neither of which are Beta Gamma's! We also had one of our members quit, so that was sad, but we knew it was coming.
Today...first day of classes. Oh the joy of it all. Kevin met me at work and we went to class on the bus together since we start class at the same time and in the same general area. I think we should keep it up as some sort of Monday morning tradition. :) He dropped me off at Williams while he continued over to Hancock. I found the class easily, I looked at a map! I know, us geography majors! There wasn't too many people in the room yet. I took my seat and killed time by checking emails and such on my macbook. The class filled up and soon it was almost time for class to start...but no TA. It's a recitation, so that is how I knew it would be a TA and not a normal professor teaching. A few minutes past and I knew after 15 minutes, if no teacher showed up we could leave. So I waited quietly, when someone toward the back of the room says, "How long before you would start to leave?" I knew right away it was the TA playing some sort of game. This class was Psychology, so naturally he played with our minds. He pointed out how all of us were sitting there quietly just waiting, and how we looked like idiots since the teacher wasn't there. I didn't like that part so much, especially since I was watching my clock waiting for the 15 minutes to pass until I could leave. He mentioned how if a few of us were talking, we'd probably all be talking, or if one of us left, we'd probably all start to leave. All in all it was an interesting introduction to the class, but maybe one I would have been better prepared for if I had actually been to the lecture part of Psychology before the recitation. I'll be doing that tomorrow. I did have a chance to make a funny during the class...while it was stupid, I couldn't help to say it, I probably get it from my mom. :) He picked up my pencil and talked about the different variables to be considered for calculating how the pencil falls. The whole time I was hoping he wouldn't actually drop my pencil...he never did! We mentioned how you would consider gravity, air resistance, etc. Then he turned to me and asked if my body mass would affect the pencil falling...and I knew what he meant, but I couldn't help but say, "Yes, if I was under it blocking its path." He chuckled and rolled his eyes. Apparently me sitting there would affect the pencil falling...even if I wasn't in its path. His point was that there are a lot of factors to consider about how a pencil drops, but if was try to consider all the factors about how the mind works it becomes...well...mind boggling. Basically, psychology is complex. It was an interesting lecture and the TA, Tom I think his name was, really knew what he was talking about. The one thing that really bugged me was that he moved around constantly and went up and down the aisles...he kept stopping right next to my desk and it drove me crazy! I like to look at the teacher's face while they are talking, but it is really hard to do that when I have to arch my neck all the way back to do that! So, it just peeved me a little. Hopefully I can get over it quickly.
We got out about 15 minutes early so I had a half an hour before my next class, Paleontology. I went ahead over to Derring since it was right down the path and under the bridge from Williams. I took the elevator, since the class was on the fourth floor, but I might stop and just huff up the stairs for the exercise. I got there and the class before ours was still in session, so I waited on some couches outside the hallway. I found the class easily again because of my awesome map skills. I watched one girl who turned out to be in the same class walk practically all around the floor trying to find it, when there was a floor layout right there! Goodness. Anyway, the class before ours finally got out and we went in to take our seats. A lot of the people in my class seemed to already know each other and I felt I was intruding. Luckily my big sister (in TBS) is also in this class...ironically, we didn't do it on purpose, and so I knew I'd have someone to chum around with like they did. Sarah called me to make sure I saved her a seat, naturally I already had a seat saved for her. There was some guy who was fiddling with the projector putting up slides and such that did not seem fit with the class...Paleontology. I was nervous I was in the wrong place, but I had overheard others in the class saying they were there for Paleontology too. Finally the teacher came in, who I had last year for Earth and Life Through Time, and scared the guy off. I think he had a class after ours. As usual, it was hard to understand this professor. He's asain, and has that accent, but at the same time it comes out a little british too. You'd have to hear it to understand. He explained his life story, and even gave us a timeline of textbooks he has been using since beginning to teach this class. It was all very enlightening. I hope you hint the sarcasm. Finally he started talking about the actual class. I think it will be interesting. The labs seem a little much though, but it is a 3000 level, so I suppose fits in. We don't have lab this week, so I'm excited about that, especially since American Idol starts this week! However, I haven't heard of them having a second show on Wednesday like usual. We'll see. Anyway, he let us out early too, Sarah made me walk down the stairs...which she was right, it wasn't bad going down. We parted ways and I went to the bus stop, barely missing the bus I wanted to get on, so I got to wait 10 more minutes in the cold wind until the next one came by. At least the sun is out and that warmed it up a bit.
That's it for my first day. Well, except I have composites tonight for Tau Beta Sigma. That'll be a complete bore...I don't see why I need to be there the entire time, but whatever.
Tomorrow will be my super long day with five classes! At least after I get through all that the premiere of Idol will be airing! :) And then I only have ONE class Wednesday because we won't have lab that evening. Thrilling.
